HPWH Load-Shifting Study Tracker and Meta Analysis

With their ability to use energy flexibly and act as small thermal batteries, heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) can "charge” during off-peak times with cheaper, cleaner electricity – doing so not only saves homeowners money, but it also reduces grid congestion and emissions. Want more info on HPWH load shifting? In this spreadsheet, we’ve compiled the most comprehensive list of HPWH load flexibility and demand response studies out there. Each row contains a link to a field or lab study report, as well as synthesized findings and key statistics.

EcoPort is CTA 2045 certified and the Qualified Products List for grid-connected HPWH is available.

EcoPort is the brand name for technology that has been certified compliant with the CTA 2045 technical specification. When a HPWH integrated with EcoPort is plugged in, it establishes network communications that support smart building applications. This enables HPWHs to react to demand response signals, allowing grid operators to shift energy use during peak times when the grid is overloaded.
