Water heating is the second biggest energy user in our homes after space heating—they account for roughly 18% of home energy use. Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) run on electricity and use the magic of heat pumps to dramatically reduce energy consumption and cut home carbon emissions. Heat pump water heating is by far the most efficient way to heat water—3 to 5 times more efficient than any other technology including tankless gas heaters. Due to its low energy use, a HPWH will avoid 1 ton of CO2 emissions every year compared to gas water heaters, and save $400-$500 in energy bills compared to electric resistance models. This is enough electricity savings to power an electric vehicle! Best of all, the savings come from the super efficient water heater itself and do not require us to use less hot water (although maybe you could) to save money and reduce emissions. More HPWH models are available now than ever before, and due to new federal efficiency standards, local building policies and consumer preferences, they are poised to become the dominant water heater in the near future.
